About Burton Machen

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Accomplished photographer and artist, Burton Machenhas spent 20 years honing his eye for detail in the worldof beauty and fashion. Machen has benefited from media attention in Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, W, Entertainment Weekly and more recently, Angeleno Interiors. Originally from Ashville, Alabama, Burton has lived in New York, Washington DC, New Orleans, Atlanta,Rio de Janeiro and now splits his time between Los Angeles and New York.

Machen believes that “We often fail to really notice whatwe see” and that “Everything is not always as it first appears.” His work is very much about the passage oftime and speaks to the effect that we have on the world. Machen wants people to see, in his work, the idea that what some people might easily overlook or consider insignificant can be turned into something beautiful. What could have been lost or left behind can translated into beauty. There is hope in everything around us; there is a foundation for art in everything.

In his photographs of nature, Machen looks at the space between movement and stagnant to capture the flow that we often overlook. With the “Urban Evolution” series his work has been described as quiet and ghostly –a collection that marks the passage of time through the collage-like effect that occurs when artists and elements work together in urban settings. Machen thoughtfully observes it is a reflection on “…the effect we have on the world.”
